Striving to discover our full potential

A Sport Champ is an athlete who:

  • doesn’t give up despite tough circumstances
  • always competes with purpose and passion
  • loves the battle more than the victory
  • is determined to turn failure into success
  • seeks to honor God and teammates before self

Camp Description

Teaching physical literacy is giving kids skills and confidence to participate in a wide range of games, sports, and activities for the rest of their lives!  Physical skills such as jumping, running, hopping, throwing, and catching are the starting point for the physical literacy of an individual.

These skills will be taught at this camp through a wide variety of games and activities.  As participants learn these skills, their knowledge and understanding of movement skills will improve.  They will also learn decision making skills based on when to use certain movements in different activities.

They will learn social skills as they interact with others in the camp.  By the end of the camp, participants will gain the motivation and confidence to remain physically active for their lives.  This will help in caring for the body that God has given them.

Coaches

Kyle Grootenboer

Kyle Grootenboer is a Physical Education teacher at HDCH.He has over 10 years of experience with teaching and coaching. He has coached volleyball, soccer, and basketball for a wide range of age groups, from 5 year old’s all the way up to the collegiate level.

“It is my belief that if you learn the basic motions of throwing, running, jumping, and catching, you are far more likely to venture into other activities, and excel at them. You are also much more likely to build confidence and improve your social skills.”

Carly Voortman

Carly Voortman has taught Girls Phys Ed at HDCH for 8 years (off and on while raising her family). She has enjoyed coaching and leading kids ranging in age from as young as three, all the way up to 18 in a variety of activities and sports.

Carly believes that play and moving our body is important for our health. Kids learn basic fundamental movements like running, throwing, catching, and jumping through exploration and play, which will translate into helping children develop skills in sports. She is excited to be active with your kids and help your children learn how to grow in confidence in these skills during our physical literacy camp.
